Rick Hurd has been coaching and teaching baseball to young adults and kids of all ages since 2008, following a 10-year career writing about the major leagues.
He was an assistant coach for Concord’s Mount Diablo High School program in 2026 and was the head coach of the junior varsity program at Alhambra High in Martinez from 2022–24. His Little League teams won six championships, including three in four years.
Rick’s expertise is in coaching infielders and young pitchers, helping hitters learn to have an approach at home plate and, above all else, how to play catch at a high level. He believes that practice is for the coaches, and the games are for the players.
Before coaching, Rick was a baseball writer for the Bay Area News Group. As the daily beat writer, he covered the 2002 “Moneyball” A’s, and as a national baseball writer, he chronicled Barry Bonds’ journey to the top of MLB’s All-Time Home Run list.
